Septumplastics and rhinoplasty
Basically, nose operations can be distinguished into two types. The operative correction of the inner nose is called septumplastic and is carried out, for example, in the case of functional limitations of the nasal sheath. The surgical correction of the outer nose in turn is called rhinoplasty (e.g. aesthetic operation of a hump nose). A combination of both methods is declared in nasal surgery as septo-rhinoplasty.

Modern surgical methods: optimal healing process

Since the beginning, the nose surgery has naturally changed. Outdated approaches, for example, still caused severely swollen eyes in patients after surgery. With the possibilities of modern minimally invasive surgical techniques, on the other hand, patients today have hardly any swelling after surgery and the result is visible earlier.

Most rhinoplasties are performed endoscopically, that is: it is usually operated on the nostrils. There are no external scars, and upon awakening the patient feels little or no pain.

Closed and open nose operations

The nose correction can be done both "open" and "closed". The closed access in the nose surgery takes place through the nostrils, but the – rather rarely made – open access to the inner nose structures to be treated takes place through cuts from the outside.

The Beauty Ideal of a Nose

At the beginning there are questions about the desire of the later and the function of the nose. At the Bodenseeklinik, however, patients do not receive unit noses, but each nose is shaped in such a way that it fits harmoniously into the respective face and fits their wearer. Consultation is the focus in front of the nose OP. It is carried out by the experienced and specialized specialist and provides safety before a nose correction.

If certain angles are observed, a nose acts harmoniously. We find it aesthetic when the angle between nose and upper lip is about 105 to 110 degrees in women, about 90 to 95 degrees in men. These angles are very important in aesthetic surgery, especially for the shape of the nose. We know this as specialists.

Nasal reconstruction and nasal structure

In functional nose correction, excess body tissue (cartilage/bone) is removed in order to harmoniously adapt the nose to the remaining body proportions.

Nose tip correction
This is generally a nose tip narrowing. Important here is the height of the nose tip in relation to the bridge of the nose – a hanging or a stubborn nose tip is fixed here.
Nose reconstruction
Here, additional scaffolding material is often necessary if tissue (after accidents or tumor removals) has been lost. Often, cartilage tissue is removed from other parts of the body and transplanted. The use of foreign materials is avoided as far as possible.
Nasal septum correction
The correction of the nasal septum curvature is effected via the nose openings and can be effected in the same move with an aesthetic intervention.
Nose reduction and straightening in the area of the bridge
If the bridge of the nose forms a cusp which is to be reduced in size, part of the lower bridge of the nose (consisting of cartilage) and part of the upper bridge of the nose (consisting of bones) is removed.

With a profile plastic, a nose operation in combination with a chin correction can help to give a more harmonious appearance to the profile of a patient: if a nose is too small, for example, it can be slightly enlarged – harmonious with the surrounding body part – for example with cartilage or silicone grafts.

What should be considered before a nose operation?

Nose correction can in principle take place from the age of 18. For a good and sustainable result, professional treatment and stationary monitoring are absolutely necessary in an optimal course of healing.

Before an operation, there is also a lot to consider for the patient: a nose operation cannot be reversed! One should be sure of his decision before the intervention.

It is also possible, for example, to use blood thinners in an operation. Even diseases that make an anesthesia complicative, that is difficult, can make a nose OP impossible – for example, severe heart diseases. Here, findings from the specialist or family doctor and, if necessary, OP release are of decisive importance.

Plan your vacation time before and after the nasal operation!
It must be borne in mind that a certain period of time has to be planned for the preparation period, the operation itself in the Lake Constance Hospital and the immediate time after the surgery.

However, if a recreational holiday is planned after the intervention, it should be borne in mind that the arrival with the aircraft to a resort is not recommended immediately after an operation. Allergy is not an obstacle
If an allergy sufferers have doubts about the pre-consideration, these are unfounded here – Allergies are not in the way of surgery. If the patient suffers severely from hay fever, information from the physician is helpful. In case of a simple cold, the decision is made after an acute situation.

Nose operation by Prof. Mang

The intervention
The procedure lasts about an hour. Before the procedure, the surgeon checks whether the patient's nasal mucosa is in order and the nasal breathing works properly.

Operated is usually under general anesthesia, the duration of the procedure is about one hour. The cuts required for the operation can very often be placed in the mucous membrane of the nasal atria, so that they can not be seen from the outside later. Depending on the type of procedure, however, small incisions – for example on the nostrils – may be necessary.

Through the cuts in the mucous membrane, the doctor inserts special surgical instruments with which he prepares the soft parts of the nose and thus gains access to the nasal skeleton. For example, the bony and cartilage parts of a nose bump can be removed, an unsightly nose tip corrected or a saddle nose filled with bones or cartilage.

Additional corrections in an intervention
If necessary, the surgeon can also correct functional limitations (nose septum / nostril). If the patient also suffers under a hump-long nose, the doctor detaches the nose bones from their base, as this is the only way he can optimally narrow the nose and shape a filigree bridge of the nose.
Blood clotting medications before the procedure?

Financial statements
After the cuts are stitched, tamponades are placed in the nostrils. Subsequently, the surgeon glues special paving tiles onto the bridge of the nose. The patch dressing helps to prevent swelling and bruising. Over the bandage comes a nose plaster and then a plastic pad, so that the new nose is well protected.
Limitations after nose surgery
Immediately after surgery there are no significant swellings, but the nose is sensitive as a raw egg. Deafness in the operated area can be expected for two to four weeks after the operation.

In the first two weeks after the operation, obstructed nasal breathing can occur, because the mucous membrane is still swollen and wound secretion is separated, also nasal blood is possible. The sensitivity on the nose tip and upper lip and on the nose mucosa can be temporarily reduced. This feeling disorder, however, usually gradually forms back by itself.

Please also note the following novelty. The special glasses, the "floating glasses" were developed by Prof. Mang and his team for the aftertreatment of facelift and nose corrections.

Healing course and healing duration

The plastic and aesthetic operation by the specialist is the one. The technology is proven thousands of times, but without adequate aftercare there is no good result. The healing process is very important so that the nose becomes perfect – a standardized behavior is crucial in the days after the operation for a good and lasting final result. However, the healing process and the healing time are also individual here – for example, as regards scar formation.

The healing process in numbers
  • The first eight days after the procedure, increased alertness is required because the nose is still very sensitive. Thereafter, the threads and the gypsum are removed, and a plaster bandage is applied.
  • In first two weeks after the operation, obstructed nasal nude can occur because the mucous membrane is still swollen and separates wound secretion. Nose bleeding is also possible. The sensitivity at the nose tip and upper lip, but also at the nose mucosa, can be temporarily reduced. This feeling disorder is usually back on its own.

  • Up to four weeks after surgery, the nose can be clogged.
  • After four to eight weeks the healing nose is so far that the patient can no longer feel from the intervention.

Risks and complications in nose surgery

Use of painkillers in the healing process

After waking up, the patient feels little or little pain, but the nose is still very sensitive in the first few days after the procedure.

If necessary, it may be useful to take painkillers, for example ibuprofen, over a period of two weeks.

Hair washing, glasses, sports, night sleep – what to consider?

From the fourth day after the nose correction, the hair can be washed. After the procedure, contact lenses are recommended for visual impairment. Only from the second week after the operation can light glasses be put on.

Light sporting activities can (re)commence from the second week after the operation.

In order to protect the nose during sleep and to promote decongestion after the operation, one should store the upper body slightly high at night, especially in the time immediately after the operation.

Travel – when and how?

Depending on the destination and travel companion: to the sea? To the desert or to the Arctic? By car or by plane?

For guidance, a few clues: In the sea you can swim already four weeks after the operation, great heat or cold should However, you only expose your nose after four to eight weeks. You can fly after two weeks, but motorcycling only after eight weeks.
