Breast implant replacement is a specialized procedure performed for a variety of reasons – be it to correct a previous breast augmentation, due to capsular fibrosis, after an implant defect or because patients change their aesthetic desires after years. When should breast implants be replaced?
Modern breast implants are durable, but not designed for life. An exchange is recommended in case of medical necessity or on the basis of the wishes of the patients. Typical reasons for a breast implant change are:
- Desire for new breast implants (different size or shape)
- Dissatisfaction with the aesthetic outcome of previous operations
- Capsular fibrosis – a common complication of old implants
- Slipping, deformation or defects of the implants (e.g. rupture or leakage)

How does an implant change work?
Breast implant replacement takes place under general anesthesia. Depending on the expenditure, the duration is 1 to 2 hours. During the operation it is necessary to guide the implant bearing to prepare the new implants. Depending on the anatomical findings, an additional breast lift (mastopexia) must also be performed. The goal is a harmonious, natural result and a significant improvement in form and symmetry.

After the procedure
After the replacement of breast implants, you should physically spare yourself about 1 to 2 weeks. Exercise and greater physical stress should be waived for about 4 to 6 weeks.
The wound healing and the aesthetic result develop over several weeks – regular follow-up checks are of course part of this.
